Not all AI visibility improvements require months of content creation or expensive technical overhauls. There is a set of technical changes — low-effort, high-impact, implementable within 48 hours — that collectively add 15–20 points to your AI Score. Most South African businesses are missing all five.

Here is exactly what they are, why they matter, and how to implement each one. These are the same fixes included in our Quick Wins Pack (R3,500), which delivers them all in 48 hours if you would rather not do them yourself.

Fix 1: Configure AI crawler permissions in robots.txt

Your robots.txt file tells crawlers which pages they can and cannot access. Most SA business websites either have no robots.txt or one that makes no mention of AI crawlers. This creates ambiguity — and many AI crawlers interpret ambiguity as "do not crawl."

The fix is simple: add explicit Allow directives for the 14 major AI crawlers. The complete list includes GPTBot (ChatGPT), ClaudeBot (Anthropic/Claude), PerplexityBot, Google-Extended (Google AI), OAI-SearchBot, anthropic-ai, Amazonbot, FacebookBot, Bytespider, CCBot, Applebot-Extended, GoogleOther, cohere-ai, and ChatGPT-User. Adding all 14 to your robots.txt takes about 15 minutes and can meaningfully improve crawl coverage within 2–4 weeks.

Estimated score impact: +5 points

Fix 2: Create and upload llms.txt

llms.txt is a plain text file that lives at your domain root — yourcompany.co.za/llms.txt — and provides structured context about your business directly to AI language models. It is the AI equivalent of a company introduction: your business name, what you do, who you serve, your key pages, and how your content may be cited.

The format is simple. Start with a comment line (#), then include sections for your business overview, core services, target customers, and key resource pages. The file should be under 10KB and written in plain, factual language. AI engines that support llms.txt (including newer versions of Perplexity and ChatGPT) read this file before crawling your site — meaning it shapes their initial understanding of your business.

Estimated score impact: +3 points

Fix 3: Implement Organisation and Service Schema markup

Schema.org structured data is the highest-impact technical fix available for AI visibility. Without it, AI engines have to infer what your business does from the text on your pages — a process prone to error and generalisation. With it, you provide machine-readable definitions of your business type, services, location, contact information, and social profiles.

The minimum viable schema for AI citation includes: Organisation (name, URL, email, social links), LocalBusiness (address, area served, business type), and Service (one entry per core service offering). These are implemented as JSON-LD code blocks in your website's HTML head — they are invisible to visitors but clearly readable by AI crawlers. A correctly configured schema set can add 20–25 points to your Schema dimension score alone.

Estimated score impact: +8 points

Fix 4: Add Open Graph tags and canonical URL

Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:url, og:image) are HTML meta tags that tell platforms — including AI engines — the definitive title, description and URL for each page. Without them, AI engines and social platforms have to guess at this information, often pulling in incorrect or incomplete data.

The canonical tag (link rel="canonical") tells all search engines and AI crawlers which URL is the authoritative version of a page — preventing confusion when the same content is accessible via multiple URLs. Missing canonical tags are one of the most common technical issues we find in SA business website audits, and one of the easiest to fix.

Both are simple additions to your website's HTML head. In most website builders, they can be added via "Custom code" or "Header injection" settings without touching any template code.

Estimated score impact: +3 points

Fix 5: Add content date metadata

AI engines — particularly Perplexity and Gemini — factor content freshness into their citation decisions. Content with no publication or modification date is treated as potentially stale. Adding article:published_time and article:modified_time meta tags to your HTML head provides explicit freshness signals that improve your ranking in recency-weighted queries.

This is especially important for South African businesses in fast-moving sectors: financial services (where regulations change), healthcare (clinical guidelines), and legal services (case law updates). Adding date metadata to your existing content — even retroactively — can improve citation frequency for time-sensitive queries within days of implementation.

Estimated score impact: +2 points

The cumulative effect

Individually, each fix adds 2–8 points. Together, they add 15–20 points — and because these fixes address the foundational signals AI engines check first, they amplify the impact of everything else you do for AI visibility. Content improvements on top of a properly configured technical foundation perform significantly better than the same content on a site with no technical GEO layer.

The best time to implement these was when you launched your website. The second best time is today.

Implementation checklist

Frequently asked questions

Can I implement these fixes myself?

Yes — if you or someone on your team has basic access to your website's HTML or hosting. All five fixes involve adding code or files to your site's HTML head or root folder. Most website builders have a "Custom code" or "Header injection" setting that makes this possible without a developer.

How long until I see the improvement in my AI Score?

Your AI Score will show the technical improvements within 48 hours of implementation. Real-world AI citation improvement follows as AI crawlers re-index your site, typically within 2–4 weeks.

What does the Quick Wins Pack include exactly?

The Quick Wins Pack (R3,500) delivers all five fixes implemented for you: correctly configured robots.txt, llms.txt written for your specific business, schema markup code, OG and canonical tags, and date metadata — plus implementation instructions for your web team. Before/after AI Score comparison included. 48-hour turnaround.

Are these fixes enough on their own?

They are enough to make a meaningful difference quickly — and to prove the concept before committing to a larger engagement. But sustained, high-frequency AI citations require the full Foundation layer: FAQ-structured content, brand voice calibration, and a content system. Think of the Quick Wins Pack as the foundation of the foundation.
